SAFE SCHOOL AMBASSADORS-Bully Prevention Program http://www.community-matters.org/safe-school-ambassadors/ Douglas County School District has implemented a research based bully prevention program called Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) in all of the schools K-12. This program harnesses the power of bystanders by giving them skills to intervene when they observe mistreatment.
Ambassadors attend a 1 day training where they are trained to notice mistreatment, think about options, and then act. Acting means using skills such as balancing (saying something nice about somebody who was put down), supporting (showing the target of mistreatment that you care), reasoning (getting the aggressor to think about consequences before he/she acts), directing (telling the aggressor to stop), and getting help from an adult for situations that are too big for a student to handle alone.
After the 1 day training, students decide if they want to take on the job of ambassador. If a student agrees to continue with the SSA program he/she is assigned to a small family group which meets every other week for the entire school year. Family group meetings are designed to build and review ambassador skills and support ambassadors with their work.
